Welcome to the Tennessee Contest Group

The Tennessee Contest Group (a.k.a. TCG) is a group of Amateur Radio operators (hams) who enjoy operating in competitive radio sporting events or "contests." The contests range from world-wide 48-hour events with tens of thousands of participants to smaller regional events which may be as short as one hour in duration. The goal of most contests is to contact as many other participants on as many amateur radio bands as possible. The "prize" for doing well in contesting is usually nothing more than a wooden plaque, a paper certificate, and of course the recognition of one's peers. The real prizes are found in the joy of competing, improving over past efforts, and learning from each other along the way. We invite you to consider joining the TCG in the fun and excitement of amateur radio contesting.

Contesting 101 Webinar

PVRC and TCG present Contesting 101 - a "webinar." A webinar is like a seminar, except that you don't have to be present to attend. Webinars can also be archived for future reference. K4RO delves into the nuts and bolts of basic contest operating in a 1-hour webinar hosted by the Potomac Valley Radio Club. You may view an archive of the webinar at this link. Be sure to check out all of the PVRC webinars at this link.

TCG Makes A Record number of QSOs in 2009 !

Despite the over-extended bottom of the sunspot cycle, Tennessee Contest Group continued to pound out the Qs in 2009. TCG posted a whopping 394 additional logs and 58,230 more QSOs in 2009 than in 2008. TCG also entered more events during 2009 (210) than in any of the previous six years. Thanks to Greg, K4KO for maintaining these statistics year after year.

Real-Time Propagation Charts

From VE5ZX and our friends at Radio Sport Canada.

ZoneProp uses a widely accepted propagation engine to determine the band on which a contestant in one CQ DX zone is likely to be able to contact a contestant in another CQ DX zone taking into account the current geomagnetic activity. ZoneProp produces a 40 zone by 40 zone matrix that is updated hourly at approximately 20 minutes past the hour. The intersection between a row and column gives the band on which a constestant in the zone represented by the row is mostly likely able to contact an contestant in the zone represented by the column. The zone numbers in the left hand column are clickable. Once clicked the information for that zone is displayed in isolation above a map of CQ DX zones. The pages are refreshed every 10 minutes inorder to capture hourly updates of the matrix

Please submit your Contest Logs

If you operate radio contests and would like to contribute to a club effort, the TCG would appreciate your points. No log is too small. Simply add the following line to your Cabrillo Log file:

CLUB: Tennessee Contest Group

Most logging programs will prompt you for the name of your club and create the appropriate line in your Cabrillo file. Simply type "Tennessee Contest Group" when prompted for the club name.
